Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Name Twins Knox and Vivienne

The A-list Hollywood stars, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are parents again, for the fifth and sixth time. Oscar winner Jolie gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, by caesarean section on Saturday night, July 12th in Nice, France. The boy is named Knox Léon Jolie-Pitt and the girl is named Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt.

Jolie and Pitt have met while filming the 2005 movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Dubbed Brangelina, they have three adopted children: Maddox Chivan (6), born in Cambodia; Pax Thien (4), born in Vietnam; and Zahara Marley (3), born in Ethiopia. The couple also has a biological daughter, Shiloh Nouvel (2), born in Namibia.
 
Knox Léon and Vivienne Macheline are the two newest members to join the growing Jolie-Pitt family. The twins’ arrival brings the couple’s family to six. While the couple has not confirmed as to how they came up with the names Knox Leon or Vivienne Marcheline, a mere look back at Angelina Jolie’s and Brad Pitt’s family trees might uncover the names’ origin.

Knox was the middle name of Brad Pitt’s maternal grandfather, Hal Knox Hillhouse. It also seems as if Jolie and Pitt want their sons’ names to end with the letter “x”, thus the boys’ names Maddox, Pax, and now also Knox. The name Knox is from the English origin, meaning “from the hills.”

Their son’s middle name Léon also seems to have a family connection, being the name of Angelina’s great-great grandfather. Leon is a form of the name Leo, meaning “lion.”

Their daughter’s first name Vivienne, the French form of Vivian, reflects her place of birth and means “lively.”

Vivienne’s middle name Marcheline is the name of Jolie’s beloved mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, who died in 2007 after a lengthy battle with ovarian cancer. Angelina has had a close relationship to her mother, who raised Jolie and her brother, James Haven, by herself after divorcing their father, actor Jon Voight, when Jolie was a toddler.
