Creating an original name for your baby Blue Ivy was born on Jan. 7, and on Jan. 26 her parents filed an application wit the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to protect her name. There is no doubt that the baby’s name will sell all sorts of baby and fashion products in the years to come. Who can blame them? Just four days after the baby arrived, fashion designer Josph Mbeh submitted an application to trademark “Blue Ivy Carter NYC.” On Jan. 20, another applicant filed for “Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV” to use for fragrance line. Both filings were denied by the trademark office, which said the name belonged to a “very famous infant” and consumers might falsely assume that the products were approved by Beyonce and Jay-Z. Mbeh had planned to use the name on a line of children’s dresses, skirts, and underwear but claims otherwise. After his filing was rejected, he claims his intention was to pitch the idea to the famous parents. Since parents are legally authorized to trademark the names of their minor children, Beyonce and Jay-Z’s application is likely to approved immediately. There is, however, one boutique who beat the celebrities to the punch. The “Blue Ivy” clothing store in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, filed for trademark on Jan. 19, 2011, before Beyonce was even pregnant, and received approval on Aug. 23. The store has the right to use the name however they like for as long as they’d like… …unless Beyonce and Jay-Z offer her a pile of cash for it.
