Cate Blanchett Names Baby Igantius

User Rating: / 3
As expected from a celebrity parent, the newest celebrity baby has been given a very unusual name.
Cate Blanchett and husband, playwright Andrew Upton, have welcomed another addition to the family.  Baby Ignatius was born in Sydney, Australia and joins Blanchett's two older sons, Dashiell John, 6, and Roman Robert, 4.

The name Ignatius is commonly associated with Christianity.  Some of the most well known carriers of the name were:
Ignatius of Loyola, a Catholic saint and founding father of the Society of Jesus
Ignatius of Antioch, an early Christian bishop
Ignatius of Laconi, a Catholic Franciscan saint
Patriarch Ignatius of Moscow
Patriarch Ignatius of Constantinople

Whether Blanchett chose the name for its religious connotations or the fact that the name is extremely uncommon, the choice goes along with a popular trend of names inspired by Christianity.  Almost all of the top 20 popular baby boy names in the US alone have associations with Christian leaders and saints.  Blanchett herself studied acting at the Methodist Ladies' College in Melbourne, Australia, pointing to a religious background that may have inspired the name choice.

According to the Social Security Administration, the name Ignatius has not been in common use since 1930, reaching its peak in popularity back in 1911.  Ignatius is among a large selection of names from the 30's that sound unique and unusual to our modern ears.  Thornton, Leamon, Leopoldo and Aloysius are just some of the names from the 1930's that could make a comeback, especially if chosen by a celebrity parent.
