Colostrum in the third trimester

During the third trimester of your pregnancy, your breasts may leak colostrum, a yellow-colored liquid that is the first form of milk produced by the mammmary glands.

Colostrum is the first milk your baby will drink, a high protein milk but lower in fat and sugar than the mature breast milk. This milk is high in antibodies that protect your baby for the first few weeks, and is easily digested by the newborn.

Colostrum is produced by the mammary glands in late pregnancy and the few days after giving birth. It is low in lactose, encouraging the passing of the baby's first stool, which is called meconium.
