Choosing the Right Hospital for Giving Birth

When you choose the hospital you would like to deliver your child in, there are different considerations you might have in mind.

Probably the most important consideration in choosing a hospital would be the amount of experience this hospital has. The more experience a hospital has in dealing with special conditions and complications, the better they get at reacting to such situations.

When it comes to choosing a hospital, your pregnancy should be regarded as a "medical condition," therefore the choice you make should be based on medical adequacy.  Your natural inclination might be towards a small and friendly hospital, but choosing a big hospital that has all the adequate units to deal with any problem that might arise has clear advantages.  A big hospital doesn't necessarily mean that the staff will be unfriendly or that it will be an unpleasant experience.

But how can I tell which is the Best Option?

There are a few ways of finding out about a hospital's quality:

Pregnant Woman in Hospital

1) Consult you doctor or healthcare provider.  Your physician or a midwife probably have the best source of information as to the quality and adequacy of the hospitals you must choose between.  In addition, they know your specific condition and needs, so they can consider what units should be close by as well as what sort of environment suits your personally, without neglecting either consideration.

2) Visit the hospitals you are considering to get a feeling of the place.  Many hospitals have arranged tours to show you around their delivery ward.  Visiting the hospital can give you an impression of the personnel and the environment in the hospital, so you know what you can expect.

3) If you don't feel like going on a visit quite yet, make a phone call with some questions you have and see what kind of responses you get.  This can also give you a general idea of the place.  If you ask questions which are of greater importance to you, on subjects such as epidural anesthetics or options for water delivery, you will be able to figure out what kind of attitude or policy the hospital has.

4) Check if the Hospital has a web site and spend some time studying it.  This could be a good starting point to figure out what are the options you could even consider.

5) Another very good source of information would be the opinion of a friend or acquaintance who is medical personnel.  They usually have the best and up to date info.  Second best is a friend or acquaintance that gave birth in a hospital you are considering.

6) There is also the financial consideration, as hospitals vary in cost.  You can usually get financial information in the business department of the hospital.

It might seem overwhelming to choose the right hospital.  Suddenly, questions regarding complications and problems arise in a time you should be thinking of them as little as possible (in order to reduce anxiety).  It's important for you to feel safe and comfortable in the environment you give birth in, therefore you should choose your hospital with care and as much information as possible.  But, you should remember that women give birth in many less comfortable environments.  Thinking of women who give birth to healthy babies in a car, for example, can put the choice in perspective…

To conclude, use the information you have access to and try to find out more information using the suggested ways.  Choose the hospital according to the criteria that is most important to you and is in accordance with the advice of your healthcare provider.

Good Luck!
