Egbert, who reigned England from 802-839, is known as the first king of England. While his name may not be on the popularity charts today, he is certainly an important part of British history. He was the first Saxon king and represented the House of Wessex and his descending line included the following names: Ethelwulf, Ethelbald, Ethelbert, Ethelred, Alfred, Edward, Æthelstan, Edmund, Eadred, Eadwig (Edwy), Edgar, and Edmund. Many of these names may not be very attractive to prospective parents, so read on to find names that, while still classic, are still very much in use today.

There were Danish kings of England during the end of the Saxon ruling years as well, which led to royal names such as: Svein, Canute, Harald and Hardicanute.

After the Danish era, we begin to see many repeating names in English history and many of these names are considered some of the strongest and most traditional names in English-speaking countries.

The following names make up the remaining rulers of England:

Edward
Harold
William
Henry
Stephen
Henry
Richard

After King Stephen's rule, we see the first female ruler of England -- Empress Matilda. Although she was only on the throne for a few months and was never crowned, her name, which is the Latin form of Maud, is a beautiful royal name.
