When naming your baby, you'll find that you get suggestions from every corner of your life -- your family, your friends and even the media in the form of popular baby name lists. In January of every year people everywhere are resolving to eat better, exercise more and spend less money while spending more time with their families. Did you also know that you can set resolutions for naming your baby? Check out our suggestions on what pitfalls to avoid and what to look for when you are seeking the perfect baby name for your boy or girl!

New Year's BabyResolution 1: Avoid creative spelling

In a world of Matthews and Angelas, it can be so tempting to take a traditional or common name and give it a unique twist by getting creative with its spelling. One popular technique is to substitute a "y" for an "i" or another vowel in a name (and vice versa). Kimberly becomes Kym, Mandy becomes Mandi and Aiden becomes Aydyn. This makes the name more distinctive while still retaining its traditional sound.

Why it's not the best idea: Your child will spend much of his life correcting the spelling of his name or its pronounciation. Another consideration is how a uniquely-spelled name will look at the top of a college application or a professional resume.

Resolution 2: Stay away from cutesy trends

There are so many baby naming trends every year -- even classic and traditional names are trendy right now. But some trends tend to scream "one and done" ... only being popular for a short time before being relegated to the "Don't Name Your Child This" file. A good example of this is Nevaeh -- or "heaven" spelled backwards. It had a big spark of popularity before many people decided that it was a groaner. While still claiming spots on the popularity charts, many people think the name isn't as heavenly as it once seemed.

Why it's not the best idea: Some baby-naming trends will fizzle out almost as soon as they fire up and that can make your baby's name soon seem like yesterday's news instead of a great baby name.

Resolution 3: Keep the name a secret

It's very difficult, once you've decided on your baby's name, to keep that information to yourself. After all, you're proud of the name and cannot wait for your baby to be born. However, sometimes letting your baby's name leak out can backfire.

Why it's not the best idea: Before your baby is born it's much easier for friends and family members to comment negatively on your name choice. "Oh, Jack? Well, I knew a Jack and he was an awful person." Or, "Why on earth would you want to name your child that?" Or simply, "I hate that name." It can be a real downer to hear, so keep the name top secret until the big day if you can.

With these resolutions in mind as you navigate the mine field that is baby naming you will be much more prepared!
