Are you looking for a cool Gothic baby name for your vampire-loving, skull onesie-wearing, bouncing baby boy? You've come to the right place for names inspired by Gothic and horror literature, film and culture.

From JK Rowling's famous Harry Potter series, you will find the name Draco, which is the Latin word for "dragon." Other names that mean "dragon" are Drake (Middle English) and Drago (Italian). Another name from Harry Potter is Severus, who is Harry's cruel potions teacher (I won't spoil it for you if you haven't read all the books, but there is a reason why). A really neat variation of Severus is Severin. Also consider these other names from characters from the books that you might (or might not be) familiar with: Falco, Pollux, Orion, Sirius, Caspar, Crispin, Harper, Lorcan and Selwyn.

Damien is a popular film name, coming from both The Omen and as one of the priests from The Exorcist. Using the name Poe as a first name in honor of the mystery and horror writer would be a fun choice. You can also use names inspired by his works, such as Corvus, Cornix, Brannon, Bramwell, Corbin or Renshaw -- all of which mean "raven" or some other derivative of it. Bram is also a name that means raven, and it has the added bonus of being the first name of the writer of a vampire novel -- Dracula was written by Bram Stoker.

The Vampire Chronicles series by Anne Rice is a great source for boy names with a vampire flair. The more obvious choices are Louis and Lestat, but don't forget about Armand, Magnus, Marius, Avicus, Santino and Mael. Other vampires from fictional sources are: Ruthven (from The Vampyre by Polidori in 1816), Varnae (Marvel comics), Vorador (Legacy of Kain video game series) and Deacon (Marvel comics and the Blade films). Another scary video game name is Kraid from Metroid Zero Mission.

Baby Names from Mythology and Folklore

Balor is the name of a one-eyed giant in Irish mythology -- perhaps a little like the Greek Cyclops, but it sounds cuter. His one eye, incidentally, could kill anyone it looked upon. Bakeneko is a name from Japanese folklore for a monster cat with supernatural abilities. Odin is the Norse god of wisdom, war, battle and death and Loki is another Norse god known as a trickster as well as "The Wizard of Lies." Ettin is a Norse word for "monster." Griffin is the name of a creature that is the combination of an eagle and a lion, and can be spelled Gryphon or Griffon as well. Typhon was the Greek god of the wind and the son of Gaia, who is the earth goddess. He is described as an enormous monster with hands that featured 100 dragon heads. Wyvern is the name of a legendary dragon of medieval Europe and would make a great name.

Baby Names Meaning Dark or Black

There are a variety of names that mean "dark" or "black." Dolan means "dark, black-haired," as does Dorran. Donovan also means "dark" and Dooley means "dark hero" (all Gaelic in origin). Harkin (Gaelic as well) means "dark red" and can also be spelled Harkan or Harken. Tynan (again, Gaelic) means "dark, dusty." It has several variations: Tienan, Tynell, Tynen, Tynnin and Tynon. The Arabic name Adham means "black." The name Dargan means "black haired" and is of Irish origin.

Hopefuly you will be able to find an interesting name for your boy here, or at least be inspired in your quest for a name that is a little different from what you might find in an ordinary baby name book!
