Just say no to these terrible baby names

There's a new trend in baby naming, and it's not a good one. Parents seem to be in competition to outdo each other with names that have become increasingly outrageous. Keep in mind that the names we give to our children are with them for life. While a one-of-a-kind name may seem like a good idea today, it may later become a burden for your child.

A recent Reddit thread brought a number of these unexpected names to our attention when it posed the question, "What are people naming their children that they really shouldn't be?"

The question was prompted by a Facebook announcement that a couple had just named their son Dude Lorenzo.  The replies contained awful real-life examples (we can't make this stuff up) of baby names gone bad:

  • Aragorn and Elrond (from The Lord of the Rings)
  • Awbree (pronounced "Aubrey")
  • Bunny (British model Katie Price gave her daughter this name that is "soft, cute, cuddly, unique… fun")
  • Cevyn (pronounced "Seven")
  • Cviitlyn (a version of Caitlin)
  • Hashtag
  • iMajesty
  • Iysabeyl (a complicated spelling of Isabelle)
  • Jew'lrii (pronounced "Jewelry")
  • Katniss (from The Hunger Games trilogy)
  • Kerystei (pronounced "Kirstie")
  • Khaleesi (from Game of Thrones)
  • La-A (pronounced "LaDASHa")
  • Legna
  • Lovely Jane
  • Maween (a version of Maureen)
  • Shadynasty (pronounced "ShaDYNasty," not "Shady Nasty")
  • Shardonay (pronounced "Chardonnay")
  • Starblanket
  • Styvy (pronounced "Stevie"?)
  • Susej (pronounced "Suzy," and also represents "Jesus" spelled backwards)
  • Tnes
  • Whysper
  • Yoonik (pronounced "Unique")
  • YrHyness (pronounced "Your Highness")
  • Yvonne (a normal name until you discover that one mom chose to pronounce it "Why-vone-ay")
