I thought it was weird that my sister named her car Calliope, but apparently the practice of naming vehicles is not uncommon. The Automobile Association reports that four out of 10 drivers name their cars. More women than men do so (50 percent vs. 33 percent), and the trend is definitely more popular among the younger set (70 percent of drivers aged 18-24 vs. 30 percent of drivers over 65). So what, exactly, are these car names?

How to come up with a name

The AA surveyed nearly 10,000 drivers to determine how they come up with names for their cars:

  • using the vehicle's registration number
  • based on the car's "personality"
  • based on the make or model
  • inspired by the car's color
  • in honor of a romantic partner or spouse, a celebrity or a child

The most popular car names

According to AA-Populus research, the most popular names for cars include (in alphabetical order) the following:

  • Babe or Baby
  • Beast
  • Bertha
  • Bertie or Bert
  • Bessie or Bess
  • Betsey
  • Fred, Freddie or Freda
  • Katy/Katie
  • Penelope or Penny
  • Names with "Blue" in them, such as Bluebelle, Blue Boy and Bluey
  • Names that begin with "Little," such as Little Beauty, Little Mighty and Little Star
  • Names that star with "Old," such as Old Gal, Old Lady and Old Whitey

Unique names

Some of the less common car names include these gems:

  • The Batmobile
  • Brian
  • Britney
  • Cactus Jack
  • The Crudmobile
  • Herbie
  • Kit
  • Lightning McQueen
  • The Shed of Dread

The AA's own car names

The AA itself even names vehicles. The Special Operations Response Team (SORT) names the flood rescue Land Rovers after fish: Bream, Carp, Perch, Pike, Roach, Tench, Trout and Wanda. Some of the AA Driving School students and their instructors named their cars, too: Aaron, Gino, Jacks, Seamus and Zeus.
