Did you know Portugal maintains an 81-page document detailing permitted and banned baby names for its citizens? You might be surprised by what's allowed and what's not.

Americans react unpleasantly to the idea of being told what they can and cannot name their children. Surprisingly, residents of Portugal support the existence of naming standards. It preserves the tradition and integrity of Portuguese names and spellings, ensuring no child ends up with what authorities deem to be a ridiculous name.

You want both sides of the family to recognize and be able to pronounce the name. While no name will satisfy everyone, we've rounded up some fantastic baby names with both English and Portuguese pronunciations.
