Baby Girl Name Trends
Retro girl names, such as Mabel, Lillian, Rose and Penelope, are making a comeback as parents are looking to reconnect with their traditional roots. Virtue names, such as Grace, Trinity and Nevaeh (heaven spelled backwards) are all present in this list of buzzworthy baby names. The name Maliyah (possibly inspired by President Obama's daughter, Malia) also made the list, as did Charlotte and Samantha, possibly inspired by Sex and the City.
It is also interesting to note the dominance of names ending in -a or -ya, such as Kayla, Layla, Bella, Vera, Ella and Mia.
Biggest name change in popularity
The Social Security Administration puts out their list of top baby names each year and ranks names that have changed popularity. Maliyah was the name climbing the charts the fastest (as well as the alternate spelling Malia) followed by the name Isla. The names and Presley were also top climbers on the chart.
As far as girl names decreasing in popularity, The SSA reports that Marely, Mylee, Miley (influenced by Miley Cyrus?) and Lindsay (influenced by Lindsay Lohan?) made the largest drop in popularity.
