It is astonishing how much our society is influenced by pop culture. The Twilight saga, for example, cinched the popularity of names like Jacob and Isabella. And now there's the movie megahit Frozen. As we tire of hearing the award-winning (and terribly overplayed) Let It Go, we're just on the cusp of a new, potentially overdone trend. There's a new baby name in town, and it's Elsa.

Elsa B., Elsa G., Elsa T.

The Class of 2032 — your child's peers — will likely include Elsa B., Elsa G. and Elsa T. Some parents may select Elsa because it's a family name, but others will admit that the 2013 animated film influenced their decision (especially if an older sibling had any input on the baby name selection).

The history of Elsa

According to Social Security records dating back to 1880, the name Elsa has always been among the top 1,000 baby girl names, enjoying its greatest popularity (ranked #215) in 1895. From the late 1980s through the 2000s, the name tanked, reaching an all-time low of #973 in 1988. Since the movie's release in late 2013, however, the name has experienced an impressive popularity boost, and baby name experts predict that Elsa will continue to soar over the next few years.

What about Anna?

While Frozen's Anna is the film's beloved heroine, the name will likely not be impacted by the movie. (Anna has been in the top 50 for the last 25 years). Fans appreciate the more unique name Elsa, along with the character's redeeming qualities as she learns to control her ice powers.

Don't forget about the boys

The boys are not unaffected by Frozen's phenomenal success. Expect your child's classmates to include Kristoff, Hans, Sven and maybe even Olaf.
