Naming a new pet can be just as challenging as selecting a baby's name. Thanks to VetStreet.com, a database that links pet owners to veterinarians, we now have a pretty good idea of which puppy names were most popular in 2014 — and they aren't Fido or Rover.

VetStreet.com compiled the list from its database of about 1 million names registered since Jan. 1, 2014.

Top names for female puppies

The top three names for female dogs have remained the same for two years running: Bella, Daisy and Lucy. Maggie fell out of the top 10 and was replaced by Luna. Rounding out most popular are:

  1. Bella
  2. Daisy
  3. Lucy
  4. Sadie
  5. Molly
  6. Lola
  7. Sophie
  8. Zoey
  9. Luna
  10. Chloe

Owners of female dogs also liked names such as Coco, Bailey, Gracie and Piper. The great majority of puppy names for females contain two syllables, and quite a few of them end in the cute "–ee" sound.

Top names for male puppies

As for those rough-and-tumble male pups? The new chart topper is Max, a name long loved by dog owners. Jake fell out of the top 10 and was replaced by Zeus. The rest of the list includes these winners:

  1. Max
  2. Charlie
  3. Rocky
  4. Buddy
  5. Cooper
  6. Duke
  7. Bear
  8. Zeus
  9. Bentley
  10. Toby

Owners of male puppies like both one- and two-syllable monikers. The single-syllable names have that tough edge to them and, beyond the top 10, include the likes of Ace, King, Rex and Tank.
