statue of libertyNew York is the third most populous state in America, boasting around 19.5 million residents. Despite its large size and quantity of open land, most of the state's population is urban (92%). New York City, the nation's most populous city, comprises two fifths of New York state's population.

New York Baby Name Trends

Traditional names remain very popular in New York, with boy names like Michael, Matthew and Daniel all taking top spots. Anthony, Joseph, Jacob, Christopher, Alexander and David are other traditional boy names that are near the top of the chart and have maintained their popularity through the decades. For girls, Emma, Emily and Abigail clock in close to the top. Other traditional girl names on the chart are Sarah, Samantha, Sophia and Elizabeth.

Another trend is classic names. Names from yesteryear are taking hold in nurseries across the nation and New York is no different. For boys, classic names like Jack, Samuel, Gabriel and Elijah appear on the list, and for girls, some popular classic names are Grace, Ella, Lily and Anna.

The "aden" trend is also well represented in the boy list. Jayden was the second most popular name in New York, and Aiden was 16th. Also, another trend to notice is names ending with an "n" sound. There are plenty of those on the boy list, like Ethan, Ryan, Justin, Dylan, Brandon, Jordan, Owen and Mason.

For girls, feminine and elegant names are always popular, with 2009 being no exception. The most popular name, Isabella, is also number one on the national list and is very feminine. Some other feminine names are Olivia, Gianna, Gabriella, Brianna, Kayla and Alexandra.
