Many parents are not only searching for a unique or beautiful first name, but they also want it to sound good with their last name. Check out our tips and tricks on finding a baby boy name or baby girl name that goes well with your last name.

Baby boyA name is like a work of art – in that many people have opinions of what makes a good name and what makes a bad name, however it is really a matter of personal preference.  Picking a first name that goes well with your last name is also a matter of personal taste, however there are things to consider when picking out a first name for your baby girl or baby boy – and even more so for boys since their last name will likely remain the same.

Same number of syllables

If your last name has two or more syllables, finding a baby name that has that same number of syllables ensures an equal sound that is pleasing to the ear. Two options of this would be Jayden Walker (both with two syllables) or Isabella Rossellini (both with four syllables).

Alternating the syllables

If your last name has one syllable, such as Jones or Smith, you want to consider a first name with two or more syllables. If you have a long last name, choosing a first name with one syllable would help even out your name – and make it easier on your child when learning to spell!

Consider the first letter

One popular technique is finding a first name that has the same starting letter as the last name, such as Jayden Johnson or Kim Kardashian.  These types of names are catchy and fun – however some people find them a bit too cutesy.

Incorporating the last name in the first name

This technique will only work with certain last names, but incorporating the last name in the first name can yield a cool and unique name! Some examples of this baby naming practice include John Johnson, Max Maxwell,  David Davidson or Rob Robertson.

Same ending letters

If you are looking for a more subtle way to find a first name that goes well with your last name, you should consider looking at names that have the same ending letter. For instance,  Edith Smith, Devin Poplin, Oscar Fisher or Preston Jamison.
