Mothers and fathers have many options when looking for ways to pass on their own name to their daughter. Last name aside, find out how to pass a family name or your first name on to your baby girl.
Can a mother pass on her first name to her daughter?
Many fathers will pass on their first names to their sons, with their son being called Junior -- however this practice is not common with moms and daughters. After all, what daughter would want to be called Junior? If your great aunt or grandmother is named Grace, you could certainly pass that first name on to your daughter; however you may want to think twice before passing on your first name to your daughter.
The middle name
Using your first name as your daughter’s middle name is a great option for moms. You are not limited to only one middle name – you can use your first name as well as a relative’s first name as middle names for your daughter.
The maiden name
If you have a cool maiden name that could be used as a first name or middle name, this is another great option for moms. If the name is unisex or feminine, this would be a great way to pass your name on. If the name is unisex, consider giving your daughter a feminine middle name in case she would prefer to go by that name as a teen or adult.
If your maiden name is more masculine, such as Jackson or Davis, probably best to not use it as your daughter’s first name, but a middle name is always an option.
Combine names
If you can come up with an attractive name by coming you and your husband’s first names, this could a good way to pass your name on. For instance, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith named their daughter Willow and their son Jaden. These are a combination of both Will and Jada’s first names and are beautiful names that represent their parent’s legacy well.

A different version of your first name
Boxing champ George Foreman has 10 children – and all the sons are named George Foreman. He also managed to incorporate his first name into two of his daughter’s names, by naming one Freeda George and the other Georgetta.
This is an option for dads, although be wary of giving your daughter an odd name that she could be made fun of growing up. Some dads may need to be happy knowing they have passed on their last name to their daughter and this name will stay with them forever in the form of a maiden name.
