What is the best way to name your son after yourself? If you are looking for a baby boy’s name that is a family name or you are interested in passing down your own name, check out our ideas for both dads and moms when searching for ways to name your son after yourself.
Naming Your Son a Junior
The top way for dads to bestow their name on their son is to pass down your own name with a Jr. at the end, such as John F. Kennedy Jr. This naming practice was common practice around fifty years ago, however has fallen out of popularity today with mainly only celebrities naming their sons Junior.
If you do name your son junior or you are a junior yourself, the next son would have a roman numeral.
For instance, George Foreman has ten children, and has named all the boys after himself: George Edward Foreman Jr, George Edward Foreman III, George Edward Foreman IV, George Edward Foreman V and George Edward Foreman. I bet those family gatherings get confusing!
Same First Name, Different Middle Name
Fathers can also pass down their first name with a different middle name. Their son would not be a junior because the name is not the exact same (which is why George Walker Bush was not a junior since his dad is named George Herbert Walker Bush). The son could go by his middle name if he wishes to avoid confusion at family get-togethers or can go by his first name – his choice!
Ideas for Mothers
How can mothers name their sons after themselves? Many moms will use their maiden name as their son’s first name, for instance Jackson or Davis. They can also use a more masculine version of their first name. For instance:
If the mom is named Michelle, the son could be Michael. Other examples include:
Alexandra – Alex
Christy – Christian
Diane – Dylan
Justine – Justin
Olivia - Oliver
Of course, this tip won’t work for all names – but is worth considering.
If moms have a unisex name, such as Taylor, Cameron or Blake, they can consider using their first name as their son’s middle name.
What About Combining Names?
Be very careful when combing the mother and father’s names to create one unique name. If the name sounds strange and has a crazy spelling, it may embarrass your child and cause years of heartache. A better option would be to use both names as middle names.
