Are you looking for an Indian name for your baby boy or baby girl? If you are a resident of the South Asian country of India (or are of Indian descent, are adopting a baby from India or even just love Indian names) then check our list of Indian baby names.

Indian baby girlMost of the names presented here are of Sanskrit origin. Sanskrit is one of the 22 official languages of India, but its use is generally relegated for ceremonial use today. It is an ancient language and most (if not all) of the modern spoken languages in India have evolved from Sanskrit, or at least borrow words from it -- much like the Latin influence on European languages. It is no surprise, then, than many Indian names ultimately have a Sanskrit base or origin.

Indian names are often beautiful and melodic, and their meanings are as well. Many times parents will choose to name their child after a deity from the Hindu religion. Other names are chosen based on sages, saints and names Hindu scriptures have for incarnations of God. Some names are chosen based on the baby's birth month or horoscope. In India, parents have a naming ceremony called a namkaran ceremony. It is an elaborate ceremony to honor the baby's parents (with special attention given to the mother) as well as the child, generally when the baby is 12 days old.
