As mentioned in the description above, Claudia is from the Latin 'lame' or 'disabled'. I really wanted this as a name but finding that out put me right off :(

Claudia is the feminine form of the ancient roman family name claudius. The Claudians were a very powerful influentual (patrician) family . Every female member of the claudius family was named Claudia. As to the meaning it is derived from lame , the likely reason being that one of the first claudius was lame or had a limp, and was thus called claudius . This certainly in no way an indication of the later very sucessful history of the claudians.
i feel this is a better way of understanding the name (s) claudia and claudius.Obviously the roman claudians overcame their "lameness " very quickly and sky rocketet to sucess!!
