The Name Melanie and Naturality go Hand in Hand
written by Melanie aka Mel Mel, March 16, 2008
Hello Every One,
My Name is Melanie too. I for one love my earthly title. My dad named me that, but all he could say was that he liked it. He didn't tell me of any particular orgin. My skin is a beautiful dark brown, eyes are dark brown, and my course hair is dark brown. Melanie is a very versatile name, and naturally sophisticated in it's own way. I love it.

My name is Melanie as well and I truly love it. I feel good when I'm called and the best part is it's not that common.

I never liked that my name meant "dark." I remember my Mother telling that she chose to name me Melanie because it had something to do with grace. I did my research and am proud to say that those of us named Melanie can now tell people, in Hebrew Melanie means "God's grace lifts me up." I like this meaning much better.

I love the name Melanie! It's my name, and though I don't really like my middle name, it flows well with Melanie. I've never met another Melanie my age. I was named after Melanie Hamilton in "Gone With the Wind". I think Melanie is the most beautiful name:) I like the meaning "God's grace lifts me up" better than dark:)

The reason why the meaning of Melanie is said to be "blackness" stems from 390, when St. Melania, a highly recognized Saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church, became a supporter of an orthodox theologian in Egypt named Origen. Jerome, a recognized Saint of the Catholic church, disliked the fact that St. Melania was a supported or Origen. According to Wikipedia, "Jerome was especially vitriolic about her, punning on her name and calling her "black in name and black in nature. (He tried to expunge his earlier lavish praises of her from his writings.) When persecution broke out after the death of Bishop Athanasius in 373 and many of the monks were exiled to Palestine, Melania went with them to aid them, visiting them in prison by night disguised in a slave's hood. She was a spiritual mentor to Evagrius of Pontus, later author of the Eastern Orthodox Philokalia; she persuaded him to go to Egypt to join the desert ascetics and carried on a correspondence with him while he was there (His letters are published in German under the title "Letters from the Desert")." (http://en.wikipedia.org).

The letters were published in German press, that doesn't mean the origin of the name is German.

The name Melanie, stems from the Greek word μελανία or Melania after the Orthodox St. Melania. It means dark because this is what St. Jerome wrote.
