Actually this name is from the gaelic 'Ceilidh' meaning a folk dance indigenous to Scotland. It has variations such as the one above and the Anglisied 'Kayleigh'

True, we use the word to refer to an informal party...celtic music, dancing, boozin, etc. However, it is not indigenous to Scotland.

Rosemarie is right about the meaning, though I didn't know about this spelling until after I had named my daughter Ceilidh. Ah well.

I had a friend in high school called Ceiliegh
and when they called the role all of the teachers sayed it wrong (like see-lee) we once got ceiling

My 14 y/o daughter is Kayleigh and I love it. When I named her in 1995 Kayla was common and Kayleigh was an unusual alternative. Now Kayleigh is a very common name but the spelling Kayleigh is still unique. She goes to school with about 4 other Kayleighs and they all spell it differently!
