my son who is 23 is named Callan......I got the name from a tv show called Callan in the 70's. It was the detectives surname.

I named my youngest son Callan and I have only ever met four other people with this name, who are all boys. Perhaps in NZ this is more likely as a boy's name as I have never heard of a girl having it.

When I had my daughter, I named her Callan because I wanted a name that wouldn't be too common. Everyone that has heard her name loves it.

My 3month old son is named Callan and not only does he act "powerful in battle," always trying to conquer something, he is a chatterbox like the German meaning! I love his personality and am glad we named him Callan.

My one-year-old girl is named Callan, Callie for short, of course. We chose the name because it means "strong in battle," but also "beautiful" in Greek and "girl" in Georgian. We didn't know the German meaning of "chatterbox" when we chose it, but it may turn out to be prescient. She has two logorrheic uncles.

It won't surprise me if in her teens she changes the spelling to Kali, Hindu goddess of destruction.

My name is Callan. I was named after an actress on 'All My Children' in the 80's named Callan White. I've read conflicting meanings on my name in practically every place I've read. My favorite though is from Old English and it means "to scream". My mom thinks thats totally appropriate. haha.
Just a warning though to anyone who names their kid this: growing up i LOATHED my name. I hated it because it was so different and most of the time people assumed it was a boy's name. i also put up with some ridicule in middle school over it. But I'm 21 now and I love my name, but it took nearly 18 years for me to embrace it. So just be careful and let her (or him) know that one day they'll love it simply because it is different.

callan is my name. My parents almost called my two brothers Callan. I never liked my name but now that i know what it means, i love it!

This is my son's name. He is 3.5. I came up with the name while sitting in church, daydreaming during the homily. I wasn't even pregnant then. Anyway, we looked it up in baby books and couldn't find it listed. We decided that was the name for us. We didn't want anything popular or for him to use a nickname because someone else had the same name in school. We have not met any other Callan's. Our biggest problem is that many people mispronounced it. They pronounce it like Kalyn. It is annoying. I don't think I would name a girl Callan. Doesn't seem feminine at all.

I'm an 18year old girl called Callan and although people I meet are like 'it's a gorgeous name, what does it mean?' my friends agree with me that although it's pretty and unusual, it's not very feminine. I have spent years getting people to call me 'Cal, Cals and now Calsies'. What's worse is my full name is Callan-Alexanderia Sheila Peatling so the torment never stops. My mum never called me Callie because it's far too common for her.

I'm a 14 year old girl.
My name is Callan. I love it. I wouldn't want to have a common name. I get lots of compliments on my name. The downside is the spelling. Apparently it's hard to spell.
I've gotten Kallan Calan and Callane.
Pronouncing it is also difficult according to, say, my math teacher. "Kay-lin". I've also gotten "Callum", which is a guy's name.
Also, I have 2 cousins named Callan, both male, so it's a unisex name, I suppose.

When I was pregnant 25 years ago, I had another name chosen for my daughter---until I saw this name one afternoon in a TV credit. I looked the name up in a Gaelic name book (wanting her to have a Gaelic name) and found it meant "to call out loud" or 'to scream'.

Be careful what you wish for: for her first 2 years, every waking hour, my daughter vocalized--not crying or screaming, but definitely loud--almost as if she were singing. As for the German meaning--she is a chatterbox too, and growing up, no boy crossed her.
She played rugby, has a formidable intellect and just finished law school---so one could say she has lived up to the 'powerful' meaning of her name.

She is often mistakenly called Kaylin, Kaitlin, or even Carolyn, but she loves her name. I have never regretted naming her Callan--rather than the many 'cute' names so common when I had her. Her name is unique--like her.
Turns out it will look great on the door of her law office, as well!

I am almost 19 and my name is Callan. My nickname is Callie though. When I was younger I hate the name Callan and I would yell at people when they called me it. Now I have grown into it. Although people still call me Callie, I really like Callan. It's more professional.
I also love the meaning of both these names and they are really fitting to me. I have known Callie meant "beautiful" but until now I had not been able to find the meaning of Callan. "Powerful in battle" fits me just as well. Ever since I was younger I was always strong and a fighter. Whether it was fighting to stay alive when I was born because I was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and had to have a heart transplant at the of 3 weeks old or so or when today when I stand up for whatI believe in but in a way in which people respect me.
Either way I love my name and I don't think it's a boys name. It make a great girls name and I encourage people to name their baby girl "Callan".
