The true Irish name isn't actually Africa, its Aifric (pronounced Africk). It may sound a bit pedantic of me but seriously this constant misspelling of beautiful, ancient Irish names is very annoying. For example, the American spelling of Sean as 'Shawn' is so ridiculous, there isn't even a 'W' in the irish alphabet, therefore the name Sean can clearly not be spelt with one. It's not just Sean, it's nearly ever other 'Irish' name listed on this website, get your spellings right and show some respect to one of the oldest and most endangered languages in the world.

Let's take a little breather. I am Irish, and I understand. However, people like to put their spin on things. It is their child. Not Irelands or the Irish language, so really... it has no bearing on how these people choose to spell the name.

have to agree with first poster it really bugs me to see lovely irish names destroyed with change in spelling. By changing the spelling the meaning of their origin is also lost as many irish names are derived from certain words and expressions.
