I LOVE my name... I had no idea it was of irish origin but I am very pleased to find out! I always correct people but you'd never guess how they say it... Char-a I mean come on... I was unaware that C and I made a CH sound. But anyways I love it and get compliments all the time

My name is Ciara and it is pronounced kee-ra just like it is supposed to be as it is Irish. Everything that comes from Celtic or Gaelic Irish is spelt odd; the name Nieve in Irish can be spelt Niamh.
I come from an average, Caucasian English family, yet I have the darkest eyes, the darkest hair, and the darkest skin out of all of my family - which lives up to my name being Ciara. {And no I am not adopted, my birth story is too good and I look too much like my Dad =P}

i was going to ramble on about how this should properly be pronounced (the irish way) since i'm irish and blah blah blah... but i see that people have done this for me. great!

i love the name w/ the proper irish pronunciation. however now that there is a popular singer w/ this name i doubt i'll use it. the singer pronounces it "see-air-uh" and i can't stand it :/

pronunciation

LIZZ-- I feel your pain. I am half Irish and my father was born and raised there, and it absolutely kills me when people don't use the Irish pronunciation.

It irritates me when people spell their name C-I-A-R-A and pronounce it SEE-AIR-UH or versions like it...IT IS so AMERICANIZED. I like the traditional spelling of Ciara (my name is pronounced KEER-AH). Part of me wishes that if people are going to pronounce it differently from its origins that they should spell it differently too, but people will be people.

I used to hate my name because no one in America can say a hard C, but over time I've grown to love it for its uniqueness.
