The meaning of this name, like so many Korean, Chinese, and Japanese names, depends on the Chinese character with which it's written. My name, for instance, is written with the character "pal-gool chul" (?) and means (roughly) "bright like the stars", representing mental brightness or acuity. I know that there are other characters associated with this name so...
RE: "paired w/ another 'symbol'", Korean names for boys very often incorporate a "generational name", a name shared by every boy of a particular generation within the family. From what I've gathered, the practice seems to be falling out of favor, at least w/ Koreans born/raised in countries other than Korea itself.
