Would you let a five-year-old play by herself outside?
That's what my neighbor has been doing for the past hour. She's sitting on the curb at the edge of her yard and looks like she's digging in the grass. Her dad isn't out with her and neither are her brothers. The road is somewhat busy, a car every five minutes or so. Oh, and the neighborhood isn't dangerous, but there is a highway about a block away.
Dangerous? Normal? I'm a bit worried for her...

I personally wouldn't and the street we live on isn't busy at all. My sister's aren't much older than that, but we make sure they're either away from the road or in the back yard playing & someone always has an eye on them.

If we had our own house with a fenced yard I would let my older kids play outside by themselves, but I would keep an eye on them. My oldest is barely 5. I don't think I'd personally worry about it too much.
