When should a baby stop using a swing?
By skysmommy 1 Year, 9 Months Ago
I have a 6 month old and he loves his bouncer, that's the only way we can get him to sleep, the problem with that is he sits up on it so we're scared he might fall. He likes to be rocked in order for him to fall asleep & Now he's starting to eat and I came across a swing/highchair Do you guys think a 6 month old is to big for a swing? I figured I'll kill 2 birds with 1 stone! please let me know your thoughts!! THANKS

Personally I don't beleive in letting kids be rocked to sleep. It just causes a pattern to exist and then it's hard to get out of. I beleive in self-soothing. Rocking usually is best for the parents but not so much for the child. I've never used a swing so I wouldn't know about what age is not appropriate. Personally I would not do it. The bouncer seat is never a good idea for a baby who sits up, especially if left unattended. Try to get your child to self soothe and it'll be better all around. Of course this is only my opinion.

I'm with lotsakidza, letting him sleep in a bouncer or swing is not a good idea, and I know from experience that a pattern like that will come back to haunt you down the road. My husband, oldest daughter and I used to live in a single room until our daughter was a little over a year old, not a good experience, but now she'll be four in January and she absolutely refuses to sleep by herself even though her younger brother and sister sleep in their own rooms and get themselves to sleep.
If you really want to get your son a swing I think that's fine for daytime when you're doing house cleaning or cooking and such, but don't let him sleep in it. All three of my kids would go in a swing 'til they were about a year or so. If they've got a tray on them and straps to hook them in they're a little more secure than just a bouncy chair, so it's ok for slightly older babies.

I agree with the two above posts. Rocking your baby to sleep creates a really bad habit that can take years to break.

I rocked my son to sleep for probably the first month of his life. Then we were introduced to "Baby Wise" and gave it a try. It teaches no rocking, when the baby is sleeping...lay them down in their crib. It was horrible at first, Zane would cry and cry....now he cries for a minute or two and goes right to sleep Good luck!!
