when to get rid of the nuk and how...
By vegetarian.mom87 1 Year, 9 Months Ago
my son is 18 months old and still has his nuk by a death grip. we've tried sneaking it away but nap time without a nuk seems impossible. we've tried replacing it with a blankie or stuffed animal but it doesn't seem to be working. right now we are trying to keep it out of sight during the day and only let him have it for sleepy time. but i'd really like to see him off it altogether.

also, does it even make sense to try and fight with him over it? i'm expecting another in a few days and if the new baby is gonna have a nuk won't that just make my 18 month old want his back?

Just cut the tiniest sliver off the tip, just enough to make make a hole. He will give it up himself because it will not suck right.

ReenaC - Good idea! But...
My son bit a hole in his and continued to use it! (even though the sucking wasn't the same... I know because I was curious and tried it myself lol...) He wouldn't get used to the same dummy, but new - without the hole, he continued on with the old one 'til I threw it out! So i'm not sure if that would work, guess every baby is different

i wasn't too sure if it would work either because i just threw one away that was so used it had a hole in it. i tried putting him down for his nap the other day without one and he tried sucking on everything around him (blankie, pillow, stuffed animal) i finally gave in and gave him his nuk. he was out in literally 5 seconds. it seems getting him un-addicted to it is going to be impossible.

We are in the same boat as you, our son is 19 months old and is addicted to his soother...problem is, he also has a blankie that he loves to death too lol...but I'm ok with the blankie, just want to get rid of that darn soother.

We've tried taking it out of his sight during the day but he'll go hunting for it and get upset when he can't find one. We try to just give it to him for sleep time and travelling..but I find some days I just give in. Doesn't help that he's had a bad cold and is getting molars.

I'm hoping to have it gone before he's 2 but I think if I don't start now it'll just get worse. Some people have just tried going cold turkey and it works...after alot of crying...not sure if I want to go that route! I know when they are older you can somtimes convince them with something like the soother fairy or whatever...but don't know if I want to wait that long to get rid of it.
