Head banging/slapping By tayrah 3 Years, 6 Months Ago My son is 16 months old. About a month or so ago, he started banging his head when frustrated. On the floor, a wall, a chair, you could actually see him looking around for something to bang on. Then lately, he starts slapping his head. I was wondering the best way to try and deter this, as I don't want him to hurt himself. I try saying no, don't do that... I try just ignoring him (kind of helps-- eh...) and I tried getting him to stomp his feet instead. But, he still prefers a good bang on the floor when you take something away or say no.... Help!

Re:Head banging/slapping By lemonicegelato 3 Years, 6 Months Ago Love to help, but apparently I'm not "experienced" enough. Sorry. I'm sure you'll find some decent advice.

Re:Head banging/slapping By missushump 3 Years, 6 Months Ago I've seen kids, especially boys, do this before. I've only seen it in preschool age kids, so I don't know if this helps, but it's usually just a phase, albeit an unsettling one. There was one mother who made her son wear a helmet all the time, which made him stop pretty quickly because he didn't want to wear the helmet. It could also just be that he can tell it really bothers you, and that it's a good way to get your attention. My 10 month old nephew makes this horrible choking noise when he wants attention. If it goes on for much longer, I would definitely consult a doctor to see if there is a medical reason or if he can or has already hurt himself doing that. Good luck!

Re:Head banging/slapping By DONE GOODBYE genevra 3 Years, 6 Months Ago I have read that this is a sign of Aspbergers Syndrome. I would get a hockey helmet for him to wear all day - and have him checked at the pediatrician.

Re:Head banging/slapping By Jacinta90 3 Years, 6 Months Ago My brother does the same thing. He will bang his head on anything and everything whether it be the tiled floor, glass door or concrete walls. We just ignore him or pulling him away. Its just the way they wanna get attention they wont hurt them selves more then they want and when it hurts believe me they will cry or stop. My brother has stopping doing it as much but now we have a new problem he smashes things instead you name is photo frames to mugs. They dont call it the terrible 2s for no reason...
Goodluck

Re:Head banging/slapping By I love my justin, carter 3 Years, 6 Months Ago Dont worry theres nothing wrong with your son its normal! My son just turned 17 months today and he used to do that when he would get mad or didnt get his way. Because he was throwing a fit I would put him on time out (as supernanny would do) and let me tell you it worked like a charm and doesnt really do it anymore cus he knows he will go on time out not because hes hurting himself but because he is throwing a fit. See they are smart and they think it will help get there way. Well it dont work for me. My mom has told me that my 16 year old brother still does this when he doesnt get his way so dont worry!
