Sleeping positions-tummy,side or back? (1 viewing) (1) Guest
Re:Sleeping positions-tummy,side or back? By Meaghan C. 1 Year, 1 Month Ago I had my little babies sleep in bed with me (in the crook of my arm) for about the first month, then when they were moved to the bassinet I'd always lay them on their backs. Once they could roll over and hold their heads on their own (around 4 months for my kids) I'd let them sleep however it was comfortable for them. I've also heard conflicting research on whether or not co-sleeping increases or decreases the risks of SIDS.
I have a friend who's had 2 kids that both had terrible problems with reflux/tummy issues and she said that having them sleep in their car seats was helpful. Emily, your response was rather... I'm not sure rude is the right term exactly, but it was along those lines somewhere. Insensitive, discourteous maybe? I've been seeing quite a few posts like this from you lately and I'm thinking you may need to tone it down a bit, especially since you're not a parent and don't have the experience a lot of the rest of us do. We still value your input and opinions, but the way you're voicing them sounds a little snotty and arrogant, which turns people off to even the best advice. Last Edit: 2011/04/20 10:03 By Meaghan C..

Re:Sleeping positions-tummy,side or back? By Angeldolllogic 1 Year, 1 Month Ago I put my son on his stomach just about all the time for a few different reasons:
1) This is the position that doctor's were recommending in 1984. 2) This position made sense to me. If a baby is spitting up and laying on his/her back, they'll aspirate on their own vomit. 3) This is the position that my baby seemed most comfortable. I, (and several other million women) put our babies in this sleeping position and our babies suffered no ill effects from it. However, medical advances and new SIDS information guidelines are made known daily. Ask your pediatrician what recommendations are being made now, and follow his instructions.

Re:Sleeping positions-tummy,side or back? By Gracie1 1 Year, 1 Month Ago Honestly is depends during the time of the day when she sleeps what position I put my baby in. Typically during the day she's on her tummy to sleep (thanks Emily my kids not dead yet and nor will she die because of it). She has some issues with her stomach bothering her and her doctor said it's okay for her to sleep on her tummy sometimes because the pressue on her stomach seems to relieve or help her discomfort.
At night she does sleep on her back mostly just because I feed her a bottle before bed so she will sleep longer and she typically falls asleep during the bottle so it's easier to lay her on her back. I've talked to her doctor about the possibility of SIDS since my friend's son passed away and he says the medical world doesn't know much about it. There is no excuse and no way to truly prevent it. If they don't know what causes it they can't give you a honest answer to stop it just suggestions but then those don't work as there are still children dying everyday from it. They believe it's partially genetic some believe it's caused by dummies, bumpers, what Angeldollliogic said and other ridiculous things.

Re:Sleeping positions-tummy,side or back? By emily. 1 Year, 1 Month Ago Look, I have absolutely no experience in this. I'm not a parent. I'm not pregnant. I'm not planning on being pregnant in the next 10 years. I'm only retelling what I've been told and I've been told to NEVER have a child sleep on their stomach until their able to roll over and get on their stomach themselves. Its then the babies choice what position they sleep in, although on their backs it the most recommended.
Everyone, you can take my posts however you want. But I'm only trying to get the facts I know across from what I've read, listened to and been told personally. Take them as rude, condescending whatever, I don't care! My opinions are strong on a lot of things and I stick to them. Love it. Hate it. I don't care.

QUOTE: Emily, I am sorry, but I really have to agree 100% with Meaghan on this one. I wasn't going to say anything, but it has been happening frequently lately. If it keeps happening, I don't think a lot of people will want you responding to their posts, even if you are being helpful. No one will appreciate your input if your way of wording it doesn't tone down a bit.

QUOTE: For me it was how you said it. The whole bury your children comment was out of line. I mean unless you are a doctor you don't know that for sure and hell doctors don't know that for sure. They don't know what causes SIDS exaclty. They have a bunch of opinions and ideas and every doctor opinions on the subject are different then another. I was told my daughter having a dummy can cause SIDS or that I slept on my stomach when I was pregnant or that she has a bumper in her crib. I have one of those baby things you attach to your children that when they stop breathing it starts vibrating and then an alarm sounds.. Something along the lines of that.. I have talked to one or more doctors about my daughter sleeping on her stomach during the day and they all told me it was okay aslong as her face isn't face down or burried. You can have your opinions that's what great about everyone is people don't view thinks the right way but watch how you say what you think. Last Edit: 2011/04/20 18:30 By Gracie1.
