My sister has 14 and 17 year old daughters. Her 17 year old daughter recently asked my sister if she would put her on birth control. My sister, stunned, ask her why she'd want to be on birth control. She responded saying that she really likes this guy Timothy and he likes her a lot and he wants to go out with her and so she might want to sleep with him sometime and wants to be prepared in cases she wants to. My sister, whose very conservative,told her no way in hell but later called me to ask my opinion. I feel like she's going to sleep with him either way and she just needs to put her on the pill but my sister is conserned that that tells her 17 year old daughter as well as the 14 year old that it's ok to to have premarital sex... what do you think. By the way I'm not butting in my sister really does despretly want my opinion. This happen monday so please help me get back to her with an answer!!!

Put the girl on the pill. Unless your sister wants to be a grandmother, she needs to put her on the pill. But, she also needs to let her daughter know that there are other pitfalls out there. The pill won't protect her against HPV, HIV, or any other STD's.

She's 17? Honestly I say she should be allowed too!

I was fairly young when I went on birth control (and when I started having sex, I typically lie and say I was older) and honestly 17 seems a little late to me. But like you said she will probably start having sex regardless so better be on birth control and be safe then not!

If she thinks she's ready for sex you all should thank god she's being responsible about it and let her. All she really said is that she feels ready and she wants to play it safe, so that when the moment comes she doesn't have to worry so much. Put her on the pill.

I'm with your sister and think it sends the wrong message and I don't think it's right to just assume that she's going to do it anyway. When my girls get old enough to ask about that stuff I'm going to tell them that if they think they're really old enough to have sex then they're old enough to deal with the consequences on their own and there's a lot worse things out there than getting pregnant, which is the only thing that birth control prevents. I'm also leaning towards personally being against birth control all together as well as I've not had a good experience with anything I've tried and I have some moral issues with it to begin with.

She should put her on birth control but talk to her about other options as well as what sex can lead to, also about how sex is a very meaningful thing that shouldn't just be given to a guy who she likes. I do agree that she probably will have sex either way but it shows maturity in her that she came to your sister instead of not letting her mom know.
