Nope, not pregs. It's a long story, so sit back and relax...

My niece is a lovely young girl, just about to turn 19, I will call her Leah. Last year, she was told it would be very difficult for her to have children due to PCOS. A few months ago, her cousin, I will call her Madison, made a big mistake. Madison's fiance has been in Prison for shooting a guy for a year(yeah, I know, right?). Madison has 2 kids by this guy and is "patiently waiting" for him to get out in 10 years or so. However, her and a "friend" decided to get drunk and "comiserate" one night. Needless to say, a few weeks later she found herself knocked up.

Madison was originally going to get an abortion, but she couldn't afford it. Then she was going to give the baby (a girl) up to one of her siblings to raise, but the sibling decided she wasn't ready for another child. Then she asked Leah's mom and dad to raise the baby, but Leah and her brother are pretty much grown.

Not sure how it got around to this exactly, but a couple months ago it was decided that Leah would take the baby and raise it as her own, because this might be her only chance to be a mother. Her parents agreed to help her out until she finished college and got a job. I had pretty mixed feelings about it, I mean she is soooo young, but I can understand the drive to be a mother. I also worried, what if Madison changed her mind at the last minute (that still worries me).

Leah has helped out alot with another cousin's child (like babysitting, sometimes for days at a time) and she helps take care of all her littlest cousins. She worked as a daycare teacher's assistant for a year. I think she does know what she is in for, and I think she has the potential to be a great mother. If she had found herself expecting a baby, no one would have questioned if she was going to do ok, we know she would.

Well, the baby was due the second week of Feb, but we just got news she is coming today (induced). I am excited and scared for Leah, and for what the next year will bring for her. She has put off starting school until the fall, because she felt dealing with a new baby and school at the same time would be to hard. Leah has a lot of family support, a lot of love, and a lot of wonderful aunts and her mother and grandmother to get advice from.

So, today we will welcome Sofia into our family. It is a good day.
