has your child ever embarresed you in public?
By caroline 3 Years, 12 Months Ago
Hello, i am posting this discussion because recnetly my daughter recently embaressed me in a public resturaunt. I didn't know how to handle the situation, and I am feeling really embaresed about the whole thing, so I decided to ask for some stories about when your child ever embaressed you in public, and what you did to handle it so that I can feel like I am not the only mother who this happens to. Thanks !

How old is your daughter? What did she do? If she's a toddler and threw a fit, that's just part of the age. My son used to scream and throw french fries at people. I would just pick him up and walk out and put him in the car while whoever I was with had my meal packed up. It ended some dinners out prematurely but I always felt people don't pay to hear my kid scream. Also he didn't get the reward of staying, I made it clear he was being punished and was in time out. It ended quickly enough. Now we have some funny stories and he's a great 14 year old. There's a million other things they will do at different ages, don't take it so much as a reflection on you as long as you handle it appropriately. Discipline, discussion, and make sure you follow through. If your child learns from it and grows then your doing the right thing. Remember they don't know all the social rules, no one expects them to, and its up to us to teach them. Eventually you will be able to laugh at these things

Hi SilverSky, my daughter is 5 years old, and we had a "family reunion" the a rather fancy resturaunt. My daughter (Lila) was eating her food with her hands, and slamming her hands on the table and whining. Lila is 5, and she is old enough to know not to do this. I just kind of laughed along with the crowd, because I did not know what else to do as she doesn't usually act like this.

even the best behaved kids have their bad days. Just make it clear to her that her behavior was unacceptable. The next time you go out remind her what is expected of her, and that there will be consequences if she chooses to act that way again. Every parent goes through it so don't be embarassed, and don't be afraid to excuse yourself and take her to the bathroom for a chat about her behavior. She is just a kid, and we all have our moments. Hang in there

YES! My 3 year old (Andy) is always acting up. Just a few days ago we went to walmart. We went to get a new crib for my daughter who is on the way. He was very tired and was in need of a nap. As we went down the aisle he asked me if we could go home. I told him we would only be a few more minutes. All of a sudden he started screaming in the middle of the aisle and throwing things of the sheleves. All the people in the aisle started to stare and roll their eyes. A lady who worked there walked up to me and said "Ma'am you need to control your child." I started to get angry. I pulled him to a corner and said "LISTEN! You need to calm down. Mommy needs a few more minutes. If you keep screaming and crying we will go home and you will be on a 30 min timout. This is NOT appropriat behavior! Understand?" and then he nodded and we went shopping and found a nice pink and yellow crib for my child.
