I do the laundry at my house, but my son can and does help with it. My girls help fold and they all put their own laundry away. We started this about 3 years ago when the kids were 11,9,6. It just sort of evolved because I figured it was an easier chore to start with. My son also does the dishes, takes out the trash and the cans, cleans his room, cleans the kitchen ( counters, sweeping, mopping etc). My daughters unload the dishwasher set the table, clear it, wipe it down ( they take turns), clean their room, clean their bathroom, dust and vacuum. They also feed the animals, and my youngest cleans the cat box since its her cat. They are just kids and chores are forgotten or maybe not always done to my standards so once a week I go through and do the major stuff or go over things they missed. most of the time we all work as a team and the chores get mixed together that way the house is done in no time

I would definitely have him help you by putting away his laundry, and any other chores around the house, too. His future wife will appreciate it if he learns to do those things now! My husband cooks, does laundry, cleans, etc. but he lived on his own before we married. But I'm so glad he learned those things when he lived at home with his parents!

Well my son does have the duty of cleaning up the play room in the basement and to do dishes, Natty usually helps with the laundry but she's just basicly run down so she justs delivers laundry now not bending down and going from the shoot to the machines.
and Jacxxx and Rebecca set up for dinner every night.

Am I too light with the chores?
I'm kind of nervous that my babies will go to college helpless in the cleaning department.

I think you should do what works for your family Lily. I was working and going to school for 3 1/2 years up until December. We're a large family and it just really helped everyone if we all pitched in. I look at it like we're all in this together and everyone should pull their weight. However, I am not super rigid about if something gets done on a schedule (except dishes, trash, and animal care....it drives me nuts when those are neglected). There's always tomorrow if baseball practice or something interfers with today. It works for us but not particularly for everyone else.

Hi LilyA,

When my son was 12 or so I had him do the laundry while I supervised and I also had him do the ironing. (Yes, that was quite a few years ago!) When he was done with everything he wanted to know how much money he had earned by doing these things. I simply put my arms around his shoulders and told him, "Son, knowledge is its own reward, so, consider yourself richly paid!"
Granted he wasn't a happy camper but he learned.
When he joined the Navy and had to do his laundry when he wasn't aboard the carrier he was thankful of his experience and commented on how sorry a thing it was that others didn't know how to do laundry. He does his own laundry to this day.
