You know I am trying to decide the same thing! It is definitly better to breastfeed, you should try that first and if it dosen't work out, then do the formula. Thats my plan. But when you breastfeed, the baby eats about every 2 hours, compared to every 4 hours when they are on formula. But breastfeed babies have higher IQ's and they are healthier, and you dont have to deal with much constipation like the formula. My sister in law is bottle feeding her new baby and shes having problems with him being constipated all the time. But when you are out some where you can pump into a bottle and feed them that way. But you cant pump right away, I'm not actually sure how many weeks you have to wait to pump. But its worth it!

It is totally a personal decision but most doctors will tell you that the benefits of breastfeeding well outnumber the bottle. As for breastfed babies eating every two hours that isn't true. my son was nursed and he ate usually every 3-4 hours! But all babies are different. IMO b-feeding is much easier as i have experienced both. After switching my son to bottle and formula around 3 1/2 months i regretted it deeply. While nursing i could just pop out the ole boob and feed whenever and where ever as for the bottles it adds much extra time to your day with preparing bottles and washing, drying, sterilyzing etc. think it through but go with your gut. i'd reccomment breastfeeding its a special bond that you build with your baby. even if you do it short term its better than not doing at all. (IMO)

I've breast feed all my babies until between the ages of 5mths and up to a year old. The babes that I've fed the longest (I am about to have baby no. 6) have had the best general health. I've been told to think of breast milk as a medicine, all the antibodies, you are giving the baby the benefits of your own mature immune system.

I am about to have a 12 mth gap between the last two babies and I've been surfing the net trying to convince myself that this last baby should also get the benefits of breastmilk. I have decided that yes I will start feeding that next babe myself for as long as I can, then dual feed (breast and bottle).

The turning point for me in the decision making was when I was researching whether or not to keep cord blood (as it is the stem cells that are valuable), when I stumbled on to an article that said breastmilk is now found to have stem cells also!!!

You do not have to wait to pump, it can be done immediately. I was pumping the day my first baby was born because she wouldn't latch so the hospital had me pump and bottle feed her my milk. I rented a breast pump on the way home from the hospital and used it as soon as I got home. There is no reason at all to wait but definitely keep trying to get baby to latch in the meantime. Breastmilk is the second best thing you can give your baby. The first is love.

To iluvandy, you can express right after birth. We have had a prem baby too little to breast feed initially. Untill he could breast feed he got my milk via tube, then bottle.
