do you think its right to spank children or does it just teach them to hit?

my parents spanked (we call it smacking in AUS) me and my brother and sister while we were younger and it taught us a lesson. i was brought up that if i did something bad their would be a consequence depending on what it was i did. my parents would just smack our bottom with a wooden spoon. you shouldnt use your hand because the child will get confused, they will think the hand is hurting them but hands are what love them and give them hugs. i dont beleive in hitting children but smacking on the bum is okay as long as it dosnt bruise and believe me, you can get a good whack without it bruising . it also depends on the time and place because if your out at night and the child would usualy go to bed at that time then they might get a bit cranky and so i dont think you should smack them in a situation like that. sorry for rambleing but thats just my opinion and others will have different ones

i just had a look at a old thread also called Spanking and alot of people were saying that it makes the child fear you. welllll, my little sister was quite naughty when she was younger and my dad would often smack her to teach her a lesson. well shes now 9 and occaisonally gets a smack (is MUCH MUCH more well behaved now) and she has a really close relationship with our dad. spanking DOES work with soem children it just depends on the child. i didnt have to smacked that often at all and my relationship with my dad is not a close as my sisters who was smacked by him more.

i think it teachs them to hit i know there was one woman here on another post about spanking & she said it perfectly she said something along the lines of she only spanks them when they do something that scares the living daylights out of her & she doesnt actually spank them just smacks them once to get their attention & thats how i feel
