Everyone has different naming styles and at the end of the day it's up t the parents what they name their kids. The 1st tim ei heard the name Payton / Peyton was for agirl and te 2nd time too and i liked it. Then i came on here and everyone said it was a boys name which i thought it was strange. So i think it all depends on how you see the name, also there are unisex names too, also i think it's a bit sad for your son's friends to tease him because of his name.

As a given name, like most surnames turned into first names, Ashley was originally used for male children

so we should stop using that too?

Gender is a social construction. We are all inidividuals. If you think about it, it's really rather silly that you should have one type of names for individuals with vaginas and another type of names for individual with penises. It can almost be compared to having one type of name for redheads, another for blondes and a third for brunettes. Or one type for right-handed people, and one for left-handed.

And to the woman who seems so utterly pissed at people using Avery as a girls name: Do you know that names like Lindsay, Leslie and Vivian from the beginning were used only for individual with penises? It is only in the last 50-100 years that that trend has changed. I'm very sorry that you feel that your son being called a vagina-person offends you this much. But frankly, I would like personal liberty in naming my child (penis-person or vagina-person) whatever I feel like without you meddling in my business.

Ok I do agree with the original poster to an extent. I dont really like to see girls with boy names or boys with girls names. I Do think we are taking the feminity away from our girls and that is kind of sad. Everyone wants that "unique" name. Too bad that their not unique anymore. I work for a school district and I see so many Baileys, Ryleights, Peytons, Aidans, Noahs.. ect ect. One of our kindergarden classes has 2 girl Noahs. I mean come on. How are these names unique. In our day and age unique names are the classics. Where are all the little girls named Jennifer, Lisa and Nicole? What happened to Jessica and Elizabeth? People who want unique names... well theres millions out there, but their not boy names. And the boys, I broke up an arguement on the playground between 2 Aidens back in March over this. My dad used to listen to a song called "A Boy Named Sue". Well these boys have boy names, but unfortunatly people have made them into girls names. These boys now have to prove themselves all the time to show they arent girly. We as a society are doing a disservice to our boys. We are giving thier masculinity to the girls. Our girls are becoming strong and powerful, yes. Unfortunatly our boys are being shoved into the back seat. Im not saying this is all from a name , im just saying that if we turn our girls into boys, where will the boys be. I think people need to decide if they like the name for itself or if they are just looking for something unique.
About Avery. I do agree its a boys name, it just is not one of those strong "manly" names. Unfortunatly your son will most likely come across this problem many times. If it wasnt girls with the name, the problem would have been the name itself. I would honestly expect a boy named Avery to be teased. I hate to say that. Same with boys named Marion, Ashly and many of the other antique male names. They just sound girly, even though they are not. Hopefully as in the song, your son will be stronger because he does have a weak name! Good luck to him.

I think you're way off. Your thesis is based on presumptions considering what a "girl" is and what a "boy" is. You're forgetting that we are all individuals, who may or may not lack a penis or a vagina, respectively. As I said, "girly", "manly", "masculine" and "feminine" are just social constructions. Something that we've come up with over time, that has nothing to do with whether we have a penis or a vagina. Something that is not sprung out of evolution or a biological need but instead has become a way of placing an inidividual under a gender label. Genus is not natural. Being a girl or being a boy should not say much about your persona, but instead only define the presence of a vagina and tits, or the presence of a penis and absence of tits. Your arguments do not work because neither the term "femininity" nor the term "masculinity" can be assumed to apply to all individuals.
