My eldest(now 4) child was fine with taking the pacifier away but does ocassionally have one, which i don't mind because he will always be fine when we take it off him(he does'nt do it in public or when there is company), about twice a week he has it but really doesnt bother with it no more.

My other child has just turned 2yrs so we are going to start working on it soon. And i really can't stop my youngest because he is only 7 months.
Try giving them something else to do which can't envolve a dummy or limit the amount they use it by giving it to them at bedtime and morning and then gradually keep going down by the amount of time they have it and when they have it

Get a really cool wrapped box and put the paci in it, and tell your daughter that you are leaving it for the paci fairy. Put it on the front porch at bedtime. The paci fairy takes all the big girls paci's and delivers them to the little babies who need them. It worked for my two year old daughter years and years ago, she's 25 now.

My firstborn was a little over two when he decided to not have a paci anymore, he threw it in a fire pit as he was sitting on my lap while camping. It missed the fire, I washed it off gave it back to him and told him if he threw it again it would be "all burned up", well he threw it again and I told him it was burnt up. It really wasn't and after he was asleep I got it out of the fire pit, washed it and kept it away (just in case) and he never asked for it again.
