DNA testing
By MaMa Tink 3 Years, 6 Months Ago
I was talking to some friends of mine who have had children all in the last year or 2. They've all went to an assortment of hospitals (4 to be exact) and at each one the baby was given a DNA test. Without request. I live in Texas and I found out that its actually becoming a common practice at hospitals around here. I guess to make sure the wrong man doesn't end up on the birth certificate. But its not jus single woman their doing it to, my friends sister has been married to her hubby for 3 years and they still DNA tested her baby.

Is this a common practice where any of ya'll live??

they don't do that unless you request it to be done in Maine

I think that it also sounds like an invasion of privacy if they are doing this with out permission from the parents. I think I would be angry and insulted if this was done to my child with out my permission.

it may actually be an Aids screening - that I know is becoming mandatory here. Maybe they are just not calling it that. And, for me, it would be a positive, for child identification and accurate family records for child. I know, those involved with Treaty rights, need to identify the family lineage, so that may be part of it as well. Depends on the hospital, and the territory the hospital is on.

no, its a DNA test cuz they come into the room and get the saliva and everything from them shortly after birth. and they get the results either the next day or the day after. even tho they didn't ask for it.
And I don't knwo about treaty rights, like i said i live in texas. I understand doing it to a single woman who says some guy is the father but I don't see the point of doing it to married women. I know my hubby is the father. And my BFF's sister felt really insulted but the hospital said it was mandatory.
I jus wanna know if this is becoming mainstream or is it just texas?

i can see both side of the coin here..
its IS an invasion of privacy.. it shouldnt be done without at the very least asking for it..
then again a man in the city where i live has just been awarded a very large sum of money because the teenager he has paid child support for and been daddy too turned out NOT to be his, its not only a monetary problem tho, that poor kid who had a loving and attentive dad has just been rejected and told that he wasnt worth all the time and money his "dad" put into him..
and it would make women think twice about cheating on their husband, at least in Texas anyway..LOL
i havnt heard of compulsary DNA testing, but in this day and age, with all the IVF and stuff maybe its not such a bad idea?. you wouldnt want ur daughter to accidentally marry her brother only beacuse they where both from the same donor ?

maybe im just rambling a little.. i have pregnant brain today.. so im probably not making much sense..

not to sound rude, but are they sure it was mandatory because of a state law or something? Someone should have to request it and since a baby has 2 parents either can request the test. So is it possible the father made the request without telling the mother?
