well right now he doesn't know to spit so I use the orajel training toothpaste because its safe to swallow

toothpaste is optional. the sole purpose for toothpast is to get both kids and adults alike to Brush for 2+ minutes. U can actuly do as much good with water as you can with Toothpaste. Now if your child has sensitive teeth or you have bad breth you may use differnt brands or types of toothpast. ADA recomends that your child see a dentist as soon as his/her first 4 teeth come in. at that age you will probly need to see a peidatric(sp) dentist. I swear baby hold needs a spell check.
