Concered :( By Shann 1 Year, 2 Months Ago Noah is 16 months old in a few days, and isn't walking or pulling himself up yet. He has had a physio appointment 5-ish weeks ago because it was thought he had slight hip dysplasia, but that is now pretty much ruled out. He has another appointment tomorrow, and just thought I would see if anyone else has experienced this before I make usumptions!
Ok, so when he is standing it looks really uncomfortable for him. His feet tend to roll inwards as if his ankles aren't strong enough at all to hold him up. It doesn't worry me that he isn't walking yet, but it does worry me (and his physio) that he can't pull himself up to stand or walk around furniture when I stand him up at it. Has anyone else noticed this with the ankles before a child walks? I'm not sure if it's because he just isn't used to how to spread his weight or if it is something wrong. I have been trying to help him extensively day in, day out for the last two months, with little to no improvement.. So I am starting to think there is something wrong because he should be used to it by now... I really hope it doesn't come to something like him having to wear braces on his feet, not sure how he would cope with that

Re:Concered :( By ReenaC 1 Year, 2 Months Ago I have weak ankles, always have. If I sneeze wrong I sprain an ankle. Roller skating sucked when I was a kid.
I would say keep standing him up, bring his legs in together closer to battle the rolling ankles. Maybe get some high ankle shoes for him. Once my nephew was pulling himself up, I would hold a toy out just a little more than arms length away and see if he would step to it. One day he did, so I started holding it 2 steps away, then across the room. Ah, playing keep away from babies is such fun.

Re:Concered :( By Alisamber 1 Year, 2 Months Ago Hey, Shann, I know you've posted stuff before and he's been pretty healthy overall, right? I just can't remember everything you've ever said, and I'm not trying to be rude, just get info. But is he really overweight, by chance? Has he been crawling? Also, this should help you feel more at ease: my last one didn't start walking until 16mon and I had already been thinking that was past the time the drs start to get concerned, but it seems my dr told me it's more like after 18mon that they may start to get concerned. So, try not to worry too much yet and just keep playing with him! I hope this helps some.

Re:Concered :( By Shann 1 Year, 2 Months Ago Thanks ReenaC, I think the high ankle shoes are the way to go.
@ Alisamber - That's ok, I know you're not rude! lol To answer your questions, yes has is a very healthy baby I found out today from the physio that he is extremely double jointed in his knees and ankles, which is why it is harder for him to stand, step and pull up. Apparently he is going to have to work a lot harder than most to learn to do things like stepping, but then he will be fine once he knows how. They also suggested, as ReenaC said, that he could benefit from firm, high ankle shoes to stop the rolling of his ankles. I guess this kind of puts my mind at ease that it isn't that I have been doing anything wrong, but on the other hand I know it's going to be harder. Thank you for the encouragement!
