Parenting conversation on the news... (1 viewing) (1) Guest
Re:Parenting conversation on the news... By Celianne 6 Months Ago I think that kids have a natural inclination to learn about anything and everything, and since the parents are there it wouldn't be completely undirected. It just sounds like looser homeschooling to me. The problem with extremely structured school is that I don't have the opportunity to pursue the things that really interest me. I never have time to do the things I want AND do good in school. Right now, school is taking a backseat to the things I WANT to learn about, and I don't think it should be that way. I should be able to learn about the things I want to learn about without having to worry about what other people think is important for me to know. Besides, most kids forget things that are forced down their throat anyway, so why waste the time?
I haven't been able to read a book, something teachers and anyone working in a school would agree is extremely important to education, because I have school seven hours a day, homework four hours at night, a social life crammed in there somewhere, food in another corner, and work on the weekends. The education I'm being 'provided' doesn't allow me the time or the motivation to do something it promotes. When learning is forced onto a child, they won't like it anymore. So why not LET them learn instead of MAKE them learn? As far as I'm concerned, the current American school system is oppressive and largely counterproductive. And I'm in a pretty darn good high school.

Re:Parenting conversation on the news... By mommytobe5112 6 Months Ago I have just recently been taken out of public school and put in homeschooling. I am all for homeschool because you can learn at your own pace and the only problem i've had are my friends not talking to me. Once I left they just all of a sudden forgot about me. Public schooling is not my favorite thing because you never know when some person could be having a bad day and decide to go into a school and start shooting at anybody and everybody. I am only putting my kid through public school until he/she decides they wanna get homeschooled and for them to get the social aspect of life. Unless they decide to stay in public school, I will support my kid in whatever choice he or she makes.

Re:Parenting conversation on the news... By ReenaC 6 Months Ago I am somewhat against public school because of their cookie cutter approach to learning. There are few solutions offered for the child that is really smart, and their is to little done to prevent unruley children from spoiling the education of those that want to learn.

QUOTE: So the first one you used as an example kind of proves my point. I know the second doesnt really. I don't know much on the matter that's why I tried to state multiple times my opinion is based off what I have seen growing up and now with homeschooled kids.. I know not every homeschooled child is what I said I just haven't meet any otherwise. Sorry I thought I made that clear.. guess not. :-/

QUOTE: Not at my school...at my school, there are different programs that you can get into about architecture, chess, and community service. And the kids that are bad? They have to help out the kids with special needs/autism, as the teachers know they can't cope with a classroom all day. There aren't any guns/knives.
