Alternative spellings: Love 'em or hate 'em?
By momommy 3 Years, 10 Months Ago
I'm ok with Toni or Stacie, but total re-imagined spellings of names makes my skin crawl. My best friend just announced that she is naming her baby girl Mykynzy. What are your thoughts?

I'm borderline hate with alternative spellings as it doesn't make your kid "special" it just makes it harder for them to learn how to write their names. "No it's not Mathilda it Mythylduh"

I like alternative spellings as long as you don't have to focus on how to pronounce the name. If you can look at it with a glance and know what the name is, the alternative spelling is fine with me.

I am on the fence. My name is Brandi with an "i" instead of with a "y". (Actually it's Brandon but that's another issue altogether! I always had the hardest time finding anything personalized because they are always spelled with a "y".

I like alternative spellings when they're simple to spell, but at the same time people are constantly going to spell your child's name the way it's usually spelt. For example, your friend who has just announced that she's naming her daughter Mykynzy, a lot of people are going to spell it Mackenzie so I think she better be prepared to have to say the spelling a lot of the time. There are two sides, so I'm so so about it.
