Speech therapy... By ashleym09 3 Years, 7 Months Ago Hello everyone I was just curious if anyone on here has put their child in speech therapy before. My daughter just turned two years old on Monday and Im concerned about her speech. She had her two year well visit with the doctor and she said that shes doing great with everything but being at home with her I personally feel that she is a little behind in her speech. Maybe Im being to hard on her but it doesnt seem that she puts words together very well still. She says alot of random words and has been slowly getting better. I was just looking for some tips from parents that might have gone through this. I try to think that she will grow out of it soon but Im afraid at the same time that she might need a little help and dont want to delay the situation and make it harder for her later on. Does anyone have any suggestions?? I am currently looking into speech therapy and things that we can start doing at home I was just looking for anyone that might have been there with their children and maybe can tell me how it works exactly... Thanks
Ashley

Re:Speech therapy... By Emily_G 3 Years, 7 Months Ago I am studying Speech Therapy, and most of the time the parent's hunches are correct. If you feel your daughter isn't developing speech normally, she should probably be seen and treated by an SLP (Speech Language Pathologist). The earlier the better as far as intervention goes.

Re:Speech therapy... By pouse 3 Years, 7 Months Ago If I were you I wouldn't feel like you are being too hard on her, most of the time the parents are correct in deciding if their child needs speech therapy.
If there are certain words that she seems to have difficulty with, you could work on her with those words. My mother actually had to work with my three brothers and me, because we couldn't say certain letters. Mostly it was the s's and the r's (instead of "car" it was "cow" Also, if the speech therapy doesn't help, sometimes it can be that the child can't hear properly. One of my brothers had this problem, even though he passed his hearing tests. They did slight surgery on his ears, and it worked wonders. He speaks just fine now, he actually became a lawyer, so no need to worry about it effecting your daughter in the future, as long as it is taken care of. And I will definately agree with emily, the early she gets treatment for it, the easier it will be, I had a much easier time with my speech therapy than my brothers because I was younger and hadn't gotten into the habit of pronouncing words the wrong way. Anyways, I'm not sure if this helped, but hopefully it did. Always remember, its not your fault, and it doesn't mean there's anything wrong with your child, since a ton of people go to speech therapy (especially politicians) and in no way does it mean that your daughter will be delayed later on. Good luck.

Re:Speech therapy... By puck 3 Years, 7 Months Ago if you feel there is a problem, you are most likely right. you are the one who knows her best, and who deals with her on a daily basis. as far as intervention goes, the sooner the better. my daughter is in therapy, because she "thaw a thnake in the thoup"...

Re:Speech therapy... By ashleym09 3 Years, 6 Months Ago Thanks for the advise. I dont think she is extremely delayed I guess I just compare her to other kids her age and they seem to speak more than her. Somethings she says well and other things not so well. She actually is pretty good with the r's but not so good with l's. She cant say Aubrie instead she calls her Ra-Ra I dont quite know how she came up with that but whatever. If she says Riley she will say Riey without the L inbetween. She is slowly getting better and we work with her alot but I just think that speech therapy is always a plus for any developing child. My fiance says that she is fine but I feel she needs a little intervention to give her an advantage....
